About the work
The landscape “View from the Kukui Tower” depicts the Prince’s Tower of the Novgorod Kremlin together with the adjoining section of the fortress wall. The artist deliberately avoided the panoramic view of the river and instead focused on conveying the very sense of the fortress. The work was created in 2018 as a preparatory study for a diploma painting but acquired an independent artistic value. To achieve accuracy, the artist obtained permission to climb the staircase of the Kukui Tower in order to examine the architectural details closely. Particular attention was given to the carved wooden roof structure with its sharp, spear-like forms. This motif became a central element of the image, lending the tower both severity and monumentality. Although the scene represents a calm day, the composition evokes the atmosphere of vigilance at a defensive outpost. The viewer seems to stand on the wall alongside the fortress defenders, looking inward at the city, its people, and its wealth, and sensing what these walls were built to protect. The Prince’s Tower and the fortress wall serve as symbols of the strength and resilience of the Novgorod Kremlin, which evolved from a small fort into a major center of world trade, a member of the Hanseatic League, and a guardian of Russian culture and independence, until it was brought under Moscow’s rule in the mid-fifteenth century. The architectural austerity and power of the tower, the stability of its lines and forms, underscore the historical importance and spiritual grandeur of the fortress, which remains to this day a testament to Novgorod’s heroic past.
