This commission marked an important milestone in his international career and confirmed his significance on the global art scene. The heroine of the portrait is Soraya Tarzi — the first Queen Consort of Afghanistan and wife of King Amanullah Khan — who played a key role in the country’s modernization. She was named “Woman of the Year 1927” by Time Magazine. Soraya opened the first girls’ school in Kabul, founded the first women’s magazine Irshad-e-Niswan (1921), and became a symbol of a new vision for women’s rights and education. In the portrait, Soraya appears in a diadem, her direct and confident gaze fixed upon the viewer. The composition is rendered in the style of American magazine graphics of the 1920s, emphasizing clarity and elegance.
