About the work
This drawing is executed in a classical academic manner, with careful attention to detail, volume, and form. The skull has always been a powerful symbol in art — a reminder of mortality and, at the same time, of life itself, of the fleeting nature of moments, and of the value of each experience precisely because it is finite. “Memento mori” evokes reflection on time, existence, and the connection between past, present, and future.
For an artist working in portraiture, depicting a skull carries both symbolic and practical significance. It is an exercise in understanding volume, head structure, proportions, and the architecture of the face. Focusing on the skull allows the artist to translate anatomical knowledge into more convincing and lifelike portraits.
From an artistic perspective, the drawing is a dialogue between careful observation and the perception of form. Lines, shadows, and light create a sense of three-dimensionality, while the meticulous rendering of details elevates this academic study into an independent work of art, inviting the viewer to reflect on life, time, and the beauty of form itself.
