About the work
“Oblivion” is a meditation on the boundary between presence and disappearance, on the moment when a person turns inward and dissolves into silence. The sleeping figure is not simply an image of rest but a symbol of a state where memory, vulnerability, and self-contemplation converge.
This is not rest in the usual sense but a need to forget the world, to free oneself from its insistent noise and to pause. The figure seems suspended in time, as thoughts and feelings give way to something soft and inexpressible, something at once unfamiliar and painfully familiar.
The artist does not seek to tell a story but to create an atmosphere where intimacy and detachment coexist. What draws the viewer is not action but sensation: the breath of silence, the echo of inner life, the movement of the soul in its hidden depth.
Woven into the canvas is a concealed line from Brodsky: “but once you destroy the address on the envelope, you enter the house…” This quotation becomes a key to the work’s meaning. By letting go of the external, a person returns to the self, entering a space where silence reigns and genuine presence emerges.
A special role is played by the technique of execution. The figure of the woman is painted softly and with detail, especially the face and hands, which create a sense of living breath. The background, by contrast, is rendered expressively: thick brushstrokes, vibrating red layers, and hints of drapery that preserve the energy of the painter’s movement. The text, inscribed directly onto the painted surface, becomes part of the composition, turning into a visual rhythm alongside color and texture. The strong contrast between the depth of red and the muted greenish-ochre tones intensifies the dramatic resonance, while the light of the face remains a point of stillness and contemplation.
“Oblivion” may be seen as a meditation on silence and on the secret dimensions of human existence.
