About the work
This is a drawing restrained in its expressive means but poignant in its substance, where a personal story is transformed into a universal artistic gesture. The young woman who posed for this work struggled with drug addiction. One day she simply disappeared, leaving the portrait unfinished.
Nestled in her arms is a tiny Chihuahua named Peach. The dog had a broken tail, marked by a single thin line - symbolizes the fragile support that still exists even in the most delicate life. The dog’s eyes reflect worry and the foreboding of separation from his owner. This portrait of the girl with Peach is more than an image of two fragile beings; it is a subtle mediation between disappearance and memory. The artist returned to it only two years later, with a different inner mood of acceptance. The piece became a direct nod to Valentin Serov’s Girl with Peaches, but tinged with bitterness and distance. In Serov’s work, youth shines with the promise of the future, here it slowly fades along with its subject. Serov’s youth is weighty and sunlit, confidently occupying space, tangible. In this drawing, it seems to dissolve before our eyes - edges almost vanish, color dims, the figure turns translucent, much like the fleeting days of the model herself. The artist deliberately leaves the borders unfinished, allowing the sheet to “dissolve” into the air as the portrait fades with the heroine’s life.
Minimalist linework, delicate color accents, and near-invisible touches create an image where understatement speaks louder than completion. This is not just a portrait - it is a trace of an attempt to understand another person and, simultaneously, proof that an image can reach completion even when the model has vanished. The drawing is purposefully minimalist: most of the paper remains empty so the air amplifies meaning. A fine graphite lattice merges soft shading with nervous, calligraphic breaks; the hand, head, and dog are rendered in greater detail, while clothing and chair are merely suggested. Color appears sparingly - a warm highlight on the cheek, an ocher shimmer in Peach’s fur, a transparent shadow under the chin, a faint pink flush on the lips. These touches are vivid enough to convey living warmth yet never overshadow the main theme - the unspoken essence of a life slipping away.
